Application phase for the German Conductors’ Award 2019 is starting

As of today, young conductors may apply to take part in the German Conductors' Award (DDP) from 11th to 18th October 2019 in Cologne. The international competition for concert and opera conducting is considered to be one of the most prestigious awards for young conductors in Europe.

The Conductors' Forum of the German Music Council (Dirigentenforum des Deutschen Misikrates) organises the competition in partnership with the Cologne Philharmonic Orchestra, the Cologne Opera, the Gürzenich Orchestra of Cologne and the WDR Symphony Orchestra. Conductors of all nations who are 32 years of age or younger may apply (deadline: 31st October 2019). Applications can only be submitted online via the Conductors’ Forum website: http://www.dirigentenforum.de/ddp – The deadline for the applications is 31st March 2019.

The following prizes will be awarded in the final concert on 18th October at 8 p.m. in the Cologne Philharmonic Hall: 1st prize: EUR 15,000 (endowed by the City of Cologne and others), 2nd prize: EUR 10,000 (endowed by the Ernsting Foundation), 3rd prize: EUR 5,000 (endowed by the Interna-tional Kurt Masur Institute). Furthermore, the prize winners can expect engagements with partner ensembles of the Dirigentenforum, such as the Beethoven Orchestra Bonn, the Gürzenich Orches-tra of Cologne, the Symphony Orchestras of Hof, Munich and Nuremberg, the Cologne Opera, the German State Philarmonic Orchestra of Rhineland-Palatinate, the WDR Symphony Orchestra and others.

The jury consists of renowned personalities from the international music scene: conductor Lothar Zagrosek will chair the jury. Other members comprise: Prof. Lioba Braun (mezzo-soprano), Siegwald Bütow (manager and producer of the WDR Symphony Orchestra), Louwrens Langevoort (artistic director of the Cologne Philharmonic Orchestra), Dr. Birgit Meyer (artistic director of the Cologne Opera), Prof. Dr. Stephan Mösch (publicist, music and theatre scholar) as well as another personality that is still to be named.
