The finalists of the German Conductors’ Award
The three following candidates were nominated for the grand final of the German Conductors’ Award at 8 p.m. on 18th October 2019 at the Cologne Philharmonie: Julio García Vico, Gábor Hontvári and Chloé van Soeterstède.
In the first round of the international competition for concert and opera conducting, Ka Hou Fan, Nicolas Kierdorf and Marc Leroy-Calatayud had qualified for the second round. In this round, the participants had to prove themselves both in the disciplines Opera and the Concert repertoire, where they worked with the Gürzenich-Orchestra of Cologne and the singers of the ensemble and the Opera Studio of the Cologne Opera.
In the second round, the six selected candidates came to conduct the WDR Symphony Orchestra. The programme included contemporary works by Anton von Webern, Olivier Messiaen, Bernd Alois Zimmermann and Rebecca Saunders. At the end of this round Julio García Vico (*1992, Spain), Gábor Hontvári (*1993, Hungary) and Chloé van Soeterstède (*1988, France) qualified for the final concert.

Since the second round of the contest, the competition has been open to the public. The public rehearsals will begin on Thursday, 17th October 2019 at 10:00 a.m. (Gürzenich-Orchestra and singers of the Ensemble and International Opera Studio of the Cologne Opera) and at 2:00 p.m. (WDR Symphonic Orchestra). Tickets for the final concert on 18th October 2019 at 8:00 p.m., featuring the Symphonic Orchestra of the WDR, the Gürzenich-Orchestra Cologne as well as singers of the Ensemble and International Opera Studio of the Cologne Opera are available under: koelner-philharmonie.de/ddp
