Application phase for the German Conductors’ Award 2021 starts

With immediate effect, young conductors can now apply for their participation in the German Conductors’ Award (DDP) from 18th to 23rd of October 2021 in Cologne. Prizes totalling EUR 31,000 will be awarded among the finalists. The competition is organized by the Conductors' Forum of the German Music Council, the Cologne Philharmony, the Cologne Opera, Cologne’s Gürzenich Orchestra and the WDR Symphony Orchestra. The deadline for applications is the 15th of April 2021.

The competition targets conductors from all nations who are 33 years of age and younger (deadline: 31st October 2021). Applications can only be submitted online via the website of the Conductors’ Forum: www.dirigentenforum.de/ddp. In the final concert on 23rd of October 2021 at 8 p.m., three finalists will be performing on the stage of the Cologne Philharmony together with the Gürzenich Orchestra, the Ensemble of the Cologne Opera and the WDR Symphony Orchestra. The following prizes will be awarded: 1st prize: EUR 15,000 donated by the City of Cologne and others, 2nd prize: EUR 10,000, 3rd prize: EUR 5,000 and the audience’s prize: EUR 1,000

Furthermore, the awardees may be hired for concerts, as assistants or for productions with partner ensembles such as the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne, the WDR Symphony Orchestra, the Cologne Opera, the Symphony Orchestras of Hof, Munich and Nuremberg, the Wuppertal Symphony Orchestra, the Württemberg Philharmony in Reutlingen and others.

Renowned personalities from the international music scene are to be represented in the jury: Marc Albrecht (conductor), Prof. Dr. Hartmut Haenchen (conductor), Louwrens Langevoort (director of the Cologne Philharmony), Dr. Birgit Meyer (artistic director of the Cologne Opera), Nora Pötter-Grabko (managing director of the artist agency Dr. Raab & Dr. Böhm), Kristiina Poska (conductor), Markus Stenz (conductor) and one representative each of the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne , the WDR Symphony Orchestra and the Ensemble of the Cologne Opera. Other personalities are still to be announced.

The German Conductors’ Award is sponsored by the German Government’s Commissioner for Culture and Media, the City of Cologne, the Cultural Foundation of the German Federal States and the Friends of the Conductor’s Forum e.V., among others. It is supported medially by the broadcaster Westdeutscher Rundfunk / WDR 3 as a cultural partner.
